Living-Learning Communities Frequently Asked Questions

Figuring out where to live is never easy. Below are frequently asked questions to help you decide whether a Living-Learning Community is right for you!

Do I have to be a certain major or in a specific college to join an LLC?

No, you do not. You are encouraged to apply to any LLC that interests you.

Can I still live with my preferred roommate if I am in an LLC?

You can preference a roommate, and University Housing will make every effort to honor your roommate preferences. However, due to limited availability, roommate pairings and specific assignment requests cannot be guaranteed. NOTE: Your roommate does not have to have approval to live in most LLCs, but they must be a James Scholar or Chancellor’s Scholar to live in the Honors LLC.

Does it matter when I submit my LLC essay?

Your LLC essay must be submitted by the May 8 priority deadline. We would recommend completing your essay a day or two before the priority deadline to allow ample time for review.

Can I apply for more than one LLC?

Yes, you can apply for more than one LLC, but you can only submit one essay. You will need to list any LLCs you wish to be considered for in the location interests section in the Housing contract. You should list the LLCs in order of your preference.

Do I still have a chance of living in an LLC if I don’t receive a time slot for room selection?

Yes, if you do not receive a time slot for room selection, we will assign you a space, and if you have received approval to live in an LLC, we will try to place you in a room in the LLC if there is space available.

Can I participate in LLC activities if I am not on that floor or wing?

No, you must reside in the LLC to participate.

Can I self-assign to an LLC room if I didn’t get the initial approval?

It depends on the time of entry. During the initial self-assignment process, you cannot select an LLC room unless you have approval. Later in the week, if there are openings still available, we will release those rooms, at which point you could self-assign to an LLC room. Honors LLC rooms will only show as an option if you are a James Scholar or Chancellor’s Scholar in the university system.

If I don’t get the initial LLC approval, can I be added to a waitlist for a room change later?

You can always request a room change after the first day of class.

Why didn’t my essay get approved?

Our LLCs often receive significantly more applicants than there are spaces available, which means that we are unable to accommodate all interested students.  When reviewing applications, a variety of factors are taken into consideration, including the total number of spaces available and how those spaces are designated by gender.  We also look for thoughtful, specific essay responses that clearly explain applicants’ interest in the LLC, demonstrate alignment with the community’s mission and describe how applicants hope to participate and contribute.  Depending on the number of spaces available and the number of applicants, even well-prepared applications may not be accepted.  If you have further questions about your essay approval, please reach out to the program director of the LLC for which you applied.

Do I have to pay early arrival fees if I move in on Sunday or Monday?

Yes, you will have to pay if you arrive before the designated LLC Move-In Day on Tuesday. Move-In for other new and returning residents begins on Wednesday.

How do I apply to be a James Scholar or Chancellor's Scholar so I can be in the Honors LLC?

As a first-year student, you should have received a James Scholar or Chancellor’s Scholar invitation when you received your Illinois admission. You would need to accept both your Illinois admission and your Honors invitation to have the Honors designation. You can apply to either program throughout your undergraduate career. Each academic college has its own James Scholars Honors Program. Please contact your home academic college for more information about the James Scholar Honors Program. For information about the Chancellor’s Scholars Program, please contact the Campus Honors Program.

I am a current student: How can I apply to live in an LLC as a returning student?

As a returning student, you will be able to select a room in an LLC without applying to the LLC. You will only be able to select a room in the Honors LLC if you are a James Scholar or Chancellor’s Scholar.
