Special Living Options

Body

We aim to serve your individual needs by offering unique options and programs for a variety of special situations. Check them out below!

Indicate your preference to live in a special living option when filling out your Housing Contract.

Beckwith Residential Community

Transition to independent living as a member of this community dedicated to accommodating students with severe physical disabilities. Located on the first floor of Nugent Hall, Beckwith is a cooperative community between us and the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services (DRES).

Gender-Inclusive Housing

Live in an in-room coed environment that acknowledges, respects and appreciates students of all gender identities and expressions. Gender-inclusive spaces allow for individuals with different biological sexes, sex assigned at birth and/or gender identity to reside in the same room.

Non-Visitation Wing

Thrive in this community of women that respects the security and privacy of others. Visitors who are men are not allowed. The community is located on a wing in Busey Hall.

Scholars Community

Join this diverse, friendly community designed for the academically-focused student, located on two floors in Leonard Hall (LAR). Program topics include study skills, time management and career exploration.

Substance-Free Community

Discover others who share a commitment to living a lifestyle free of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs when you live in this Snyder Hall community. Because the entire hall is substance-free, it provides a positive atmosphere with mature students who respect each others’ choice to be committed to healthy habits. Before the semester begins, you must sign a contract agreeing to maintain a substance-free lifestyle.

Student Parents

Will you be moving to campus with your family? If so, we have a community for you! Our family-friendly apartment communities offer organized activities for all ages, a pre-school and after-school program and easy access to the local bus service.

Transfer Community

If you are a transfer student, this community exists to help you feel like they are a part of the Illinois community from the very first day. Located on the fourth floor of Scott Hall, hall programming specifically supports your  needs. In addition to the Transfer Community, you are welcome in any of our hall communities (both undergraduate and graduate upper-division). Bousfield Hall is also exclusively home to sophomores and seniors, which can make a nice transition for transfer students as well!  And if you're ready for an apartment, consider the Ashton Woods community.

Veterans

We are proud to support and welcome you as you find your home on campus. Our graduate
upper-division residence halls
, Sherman and Daniels, can provide a traditional hall experience while also
offering a more private, mature environment. If you are more interested in apartment living, or if you plan
to bring your family with you, our apartments are great options. ADA/Accessible housing options are also
available.
When you are completing the online housing contract, please be sure to note your veteran status in
the application's Special Needs box.

  • Active Duty and Flexibility: We understand that you may not be able to predict your schedule. If you are called to active duty while living with us, you will not be penalized. Please make sure to complete a contract cancellation to let us know. Our residence hall contract and apartment lease allows for the possibility that you may need to leave campus before the academic year is finished.
  • Live-In Requirements: Students over 21 are not required to live on campus, and we have an exemption waiver process for students under 21 who wish to request to be released from the live-in requirement.
