Dining World Records

University Housing has broken a number of world records over the past several years, as part of the activities surrounding New Student Convocation.

2014 - Spread

On August 22, 2014, University Housing, the College of ACES, and University of Illinois students broke the record for the world's largest jar of spread. The final product measured 143 centimeters, or 4.691 feet, and contained 26,880 one-tablespoon servings. The tomato spread was vegan and featured local produce, including more than 1,000 pounds of tomatoes from the on-campus Student Sustainable Farm. Other ingredients used to prepare the spread included peaches, beet sugar, local balsamic vinegar, and water.

2013 - Salsa

On August 23, 2013, University Housing created the world’s largest serving of salsa, weighing 6,840 pounds. Preparation of the salsa required 7,000 pounds of tomatoes, 600 pounds of onions, 20 pounds of jalapeño peppers, 375 bunches of cilantro, and 70 gallons of lime juice, much of which was sourced from the on-campus Student Sustainable Farm. This record beat the one previously held by Asociación de Productores del Tomates de Los Palacios (Spain) which weighed in at 5,868 pounds.

2012 - Corn Husking

On August 24, 2012, University of Illinois beat the world record for the greatest number of people simultaneously husking corn. Directly following New Student Convocation, the record was set when 3,463 people gathered to simultaneously husk corn. All 4.18 tons of sweet corn was sourced from Borzynski Farms in Easton, Illinois. After the event, it was washed, cooked, and served for dinner in the University Housing dining halls.

2011 - Smoothie

On August 19, 2011, University Housing Dining Services mixed 90 pounds of strawberries, 1,035 pounds of yogurt, and 99 gallons of pineapple juice to create the world’s largest smoothie. It rang in at 345-gallons beating the previous record which was held by Dairy Farmers of Canada, whose smoothie was 264-gallons. The finished product served about 8,000 people with each 4-ounce serving containing a modest 67 calories. In total, however, the smoothie contained a whopping 745,710 calories, 19,042 grams of protein, 4,768 grams of fat, and 160,898 grams of carbohydrates.
