Returning Residents Frequently Asked Questions

The information below is about the Housing Sign-Up process. Housing Sign-Up is for returning residents currently living in University Housing who wish to return to the residence halls the following academic year.

Is there a required deposit for continuing students who complete Housing Sign-Up?

No. Students who return to live with University Housing will receive a waiver of the $100 application fee as a thank you for returning.

Will I receive a confirmation if I have successfully completed the University Housing contract? Can I make changes?

•    You will receive a contract confirmation email after you successfully complete your University Housing contract. If you do not receive the email confirmation, you do not have a completed contract.
•    Make sure you checked the box at the end of the process, which records your electronic signature. The checked box also indicates you have read and agree to the terms and conditions of the University Housing contract.
•    To make changes to your personal information or housing assignment, you may log back into the Housing Sign-Up site to review and/or change your selection until Housing Sign-Up is closed.

How do I request a specific roommate?

University Housing does not guarantee preferred roommates reside together, but we will assist when we are able to do so.

If my preferred roommate currently lives in University Housing:
•    Both roommates must indicate their interest to return to University Housing during the interest phase.
•    During the roommate phase, search for your preferred roommate in the online Housing Contract using their University ID Number (UIN) or NetId.
•    Assign your preferred roommate to the adjacent space in the room you select. Or pick an open room where you can assign yourself and your roommate can assign themselves to the adjacent space.
•     Both residents must sign and complete the contract for the space to be confirmed.
•    NOTE: Once you and your roommate have been assigned a space, you cannot be assigned a second time. Each contract holder will be responsible for their own room changes after initial placement.

If my preferred roommate is already on campus as a continuing student but is not currently living in University Housing:
•    A preferred roommate who is already on campus as a continuing student but not living with University Housing may not have an opportunity to sign a contract due to a limited number of spaces for returning residents.
•    Current Illinois students will be offered an opportunity to join the wait list only if space is available.

If my preferred roommate is not currently living on-campus and will be entering as a first-year or new first-year transfer for the upcoming academic year:
Within the contract, on the Roommate Search, you will be able to select an option to provide information regarding an incoming first-year student you would prefer as a roommate. You will be asked to provide the first and last name of the incoming first-year student, date of birth and the preferred roommate's email address.

During your assigned Housing Sign-Up entry time, please contact the Housing Information Office at 217-333-7111, so that we can assist in holding the space for your preferred roommate. We will make every best effort, but cannot guarantee a specific space be saved.

Please note that the incoming first-year student will need to complete the corresponding academic year contract no later than the Priority Deadline of May 8 in order to secure the saved space. If a contract is not completed by May 8, the space will be released for other assignment needs.

How do I request an undergraduate single room for next year?

Residents who receive a timeslot to choose a room in the Housing Sign-Up lottery, may select any available single during their self-assignment time period. Note that single rooms will be displayed as 1/1, which means there is one open space in a single room.

Undergraduate single rooms are located in:

Barton – Lundgren
Nugent
Wassaja
Bousfield
Taft-Van Doren
Illinois Street Residence Halls
Busey-Evans
Florida Avenue Residence Halls
Lincoln Avenue Residence Halls
Pennsylvania Avenue Residence Halls

How can I live in Daniels Hall or Sherman Hall?

Residents who currently live in Daniels or Sherman who receive a timeslot to choose a room in the Housing Sign-Up lottery, may select any available graduate upper-division space during their self-assignment time period.  If additional space remains for other returning residents, it will be visible to select.

What options are there for coed or gender-inclusive housing?

  • Coed rooms acknowledge, respect and appreciate students of all gender identities and expressions within the same room.

Gender-inclusive spaces allow for individuals with different biological sexes, sex assigned at birth and/or gender identity to reside in the same room.

Coed or gender-inclusive rooms are found in these locations:

  • Allen Hall
  • Bousfield Hall
  • Hopkins Hall
  • Pennsylvania Avenue Residence Halls
  • Scott Hall
  • Sherman Hall
  • Snyder Hall
  • Townsend Hall (ISR)
  • Trelease Hall (FAR)
  • Wassaja Hall
  • Weston Hall

See the gender-inclusive options page for additional details. To explore other options that accommodate your gender identity or gender expression, please contact our Housing Information Office at 217-333-7111 or housing@illinois.edu. We are happy to help you find the living arrangement that works for you.

What if I’m applying to be a resident advisor (RA)?

•    RA candidates will be notified of their applicant status by the end of January.
Candidates who are not offered an RA position or who are chosen as alternates are subject to the same contract terms as any student. Therefore, if an RA alternate signs a contract during Housing Sign-Up, they have 14 days to cancel.
•    If the RA candidate is hired 14 days after the contract is signed, the student must contact our Housing Information Office at housing@illinois.edu to cancel their contract without a cancellation fee.
•    All RA candidates who wish to return to the residence halls regardless of employment offer need to complete Housing Sign-Up. This is the only time that you will be able to guarantee housing for next academic year.

What if I want to cancel my contract?

•    Once you select a room and complete a contract, you have 14 days to cancel the contract with no fee. If you decide to cancel after the 14-day period, there will be a cancellation fee of up to 75% of your entire contract amount.
•    If you sign a contract online during Housing Sign-Up and decide later that you want to cancel your assignment, log on and click the "Cancel Contract" button.
•    If you cancel the contract after 14 days of signing, you are still responsible for a contract cancellation fee.

I am not sure where I want to live. I am considering moving off-campus. Should I sign a University Housing Contract as a backup?

Wait until you have made your decision about where to live before you sign a housing contract. Our contract is a legally binding agreement, which means that we cannot release you to live off-campus. Please take time to consider your options before you make a commitment to live with us.

What if I sign the University Housing contract and a lease with a private company off-campus?

If you sign both a contract and a lease, you will likely be financially responsible for both legally binding agreements. Please do not put yourself in this situation and read all the terms of the lease or contract before signing. University Housing outlines the limited approved reasons for release in the terms and conditions of the contract.

Can I get out of the contract if I later decide I want to move off-campus?

No. The contract you are signing is a binding, legal agreement, so we do not release students to make other housing arrangements. You will be financially responsible for the terms of your University Housing Contract for the next academic year.

What if I need special housing or ADA accommodations?

If you currently require special housing/ADA accommodations and would like to continue with the same accommodations for the next school year, express your interest in returning via the Housing Sign-Up process. If you want to select a different room, please complete the interest portion of Housing Sign-Up and contact the assistant director of Housing Information via email, housing@illinois.edu, or call 217-333-7111, to discuss potential options.

Check out our accommodations and assignment considerations page for more information.

What if I want to choose a living-learning community or special living option?

Students who receive a randomized lottery timeslot and currently live in living-learning communities, non-visitation rooms, Scholars Community, Transfer Community and the Snyder substance-free community may reassign to any available space during the assigned time period. Please note, the Honors LLC and the Transfer Community have additional eligibility requirements.

What is the substance-free community, and how do I select it?

The substance-free community is available on the first and second floors of Snyder Hall, a coed traditional residence hall located in the Ikenberry South Area. This substance-free community promotes and respects the personal choice to abstain from alcohol consumption in the hall or to participate in low-risk, responsible alcohol consumption outside of the hall. Within the hall, the substance-free living community prohibits the presence of alcohol for all residents and their guests, regardless of age and the associated results of intoxication. Smoking and drugs are prohibited in every residence hall.

The substance-free community is an optional living area and requires a commitment from the student to abide by the substance-free lifestyle. All residents of the community are expected to abide by the substance-free lifestyle. If you wish to choose a substance-free room, select a room in Snyder Hall on the first or second floor.

What does having limited spaces for returning residents mean?

Due to an increased demand to live with University Housing, we have a limited number of spaces available for returning residents for the fall 2026 – fall 2027 academic year.  If more students are interested than space is available for returners, timeslots will be provided via a randomized lottery process.

What is the returning resident waitlist and how do I join it?

•    When the designated number of spaces for returners are filled, those who expressed interest but did not receive a randomized timeslot will be automatically added to the waitlist.  If space becomes available after all timeslots have occurred, University Housing will offer the opportunity to contract to those on the waitlist.
•    Residents who currently live with University Housing who do not express interest but later want to contract to live with University Housing will be added to the waitlist after those who initially expressed interest.
