Be an iGuide

An Illini tradition!

Body

Our tradition of serving the campus began in 1947, and the Illini Guide (iGuide) program is one of the longest-running student programs at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. We need students like you to help keep the tradition going. We hope you will be as excited about being an iGuide as other Illinois students have been for more than 75 years!

Thousands of new students join our community for the first time each fall. Serving as an iGuide is a great opportunity to introduce these students and their families to campus and make a real impact. iGuides wearing orange shirts are an integral part of Move-In, helping new students and their families as they move in and transition to campus life.

What do iGuides do?

  • Welcome new Illini to campus.
  • Meet and greet individual students and families during Move-In before the fall semester.
  • Provide a great first impression of the University of Illinois.
  • Direct traffic.
  • Share their expertise by assisting new students with their transition to the university.
  • Seek out answers to questions from students and families.

What are the benefits to being an iGuide?

  • Get paid $50 per shift worked – and work as many shifts as you’d like!

  • Earn one free meal ticket per shift.
  • Move into University Housing early and beat the crowds.
  • Get a free T-shirt.
  • Gain valuable leadership experience.
  • Be a role model and make new friends.

If you have additional questions, please e-mail iGuide@housing.illinois.edu.

iGuide Campus Coordinator

Campus coordinators are a team of four to eight students responsible for coordinating the iGuide program and some of the details related to Move-In. This position is reserved for students who have previously served as an iGuide or iGuide Hall Coordinator. They work with the iGuide advisers to plan training, assist with recruiting efforts and assist with coordinating and implementing the Move-In plan. They also provide oversight for iGuide hall coordinators and lead a specific area of campus on opening day by troubleshooting and supporting hall coordinators and iGuides.

Frequently Asked Questions:

When can I sign up to be an iGuide?

iGuide registration will open early in the spring semester each year.

Can I switch halls from where I am assigned to be an iGuide?

Because we have to keep track of as many as 800 iGuides, switching halls is discouraged. There is a maximum number of iGuides who will be able to register for each location to ensure we have a successful Move-In experience for the entire campus.

Can I live off-campus or in another hall other than where I am registered to be an iGuide?

Yes! Any Illinois student who is currently registered and returning to Illinois in the fall as a student can be an iGuide. You can live in any hall, apartment complex or house and still register to be an iGuide.

I'm an incoming first-year student. Can I be an Illini Guide?

The Illini Guide program depends on students who are returning to the university. Beyond moving students in, iGuides provide new students with informal information about the college experience, such as who the staff in the building are, the location of specific buildings or suggestions for a good place to grab lunch. At this time, the iGuide program is only for returning students to the university. Enjoy your first year, and we'll see you next year in the orange iGuide shirt!

I signed up to be an iGuide but found out I have a conflict. What can I do?

Please return to the registration page and remove yourself by clicking the "no thanks" button.

When do iGuides move into the residence halls?

iGuides are permitted to move in early. Watch your email inbox for updates on when you'll report to campus.

Do I have to bring any documentation that I'm an iGuide when I move in early?

No documentation is necessary. Just go to your area office (with your i-card) to pick up your keys. Your hall coordinators will keep track of who attends training and works during Move-In. Please be aware: If you move in early but do not fulfill the iGuide expectations, you will be charged for the night(s) you stayed.

How do I sign up to be an iGuide for Daniels Hall and Sherman Hall?

If you are interested in volunteering as an iGuide in Daniels or Sherman halls, please send an email to gradhalls@housing.illinois.edu.
