Better Choices on Your Menu

Making Nutritious Choices 

Have you ever had a hard time figuring out what is healthy when there are so many options? Dining has done the work for you! Choose an item with the Better Choice symbol and you’ll know you are picking one of the better options for a balanced and healthy diet.

The dietitians with Dining Services have identified choices on the daily menu at each dining hall that are better choices. The following guidelines are used.

Better Choice Guidelines

Composed Salad

  • ≤ 150 calories per serving
  • Contains protein, fiber, and or fruit/vegetable
  • ≥ 50% grains are whole
  • < 600 mg sodium 

Entrée

  • ≤ 400 calories
  • Contains protein, fiber, and or fruit/vegetable
  • ≥ 50% grains are whole
  • < 600 mg sodium
  • Not deep fried
  • <25% kcal from saturated fat for non-mixed dishes, i.e. single protein entrées (bacon, chicken breast w/ sauce, breakfast sausage 

Side

  • ≤ 150 calories
  • Contains protein, fiber, and or fruit/vegetable
  • ≥ 50% grains are whole
  • < 600 mg sodium
  • Not deep fried 

Soup

  • ≤ 250 calories
  • < 700 mg sodium
  • Contains fiber, vegetable, or whole grain

Dessert

  • Contains whole grain and/or is fruit-based
  • Not deep fried
